The Golden Rule: Layers
Iceland weather changes rapidly. The key is layering so you can add or remove clothing as conditions shift.
Essential Layers
Base Layer
- Moisture-wicking thermal top
- Thermal leggings or wool base
Mid Layer
- Fleece jacket or wool sweater
- Down vest (optional extra warmth)
Outer Layer
- Waterproof, windproof jacket (most important!)
- Waterproof pants (for Gullfoss spray)
Footwear
- Waterproof hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes
- Wool or moisture-wicking socks
- No cotton socks—they stay wet!
Accessories
- Warm hat (wind at Gullfoss is strong)
- Gloves (waterproof preferred)
- Scarf or buff
- Sunglasses (even in winter)
By Season
| Season | Key Items |
|---|---|
| Winter | Extra thermals, hand warmers, ice grips for boots |
| Spring/Fall | Full layering system, rain gear |
| Summer | Lighter layers, sunscreen, eye mask for sleep |
Pro Tip
Gullfoss spray will make you wet. Bring a plastic bag to protect your camera and phone, and wear waterproof outer layers.
